During September and October, 1916, 47th Division had been heavily involved in the fighting on the Somme but by mid October they had moved north to the Ypres salient. where they took up position near the Bluff in the southern part of the salient. On 29th October, 1916, 17th London of 141 Brigade, moved into the front line here. The Battalion Diary entry for 30th October is simply ‘situation quiet’. However, it was not so quiet for the five men who were killed and the three who were wounded on this day. One of those killed was Jack Cohen. |
